About the museum

The museum occupies the former church of the Assumption in Pont de Suert, known as the Església Vella, which was the town's parish church until ENHER financed a new church, consecrated in 1955. The building has Romanesque origins, dating from around the 12th century, and underwent numerous reforms during the Baroque period. It forms a complex with the former Palau Abacial (abbatial palace), from the 15th and 16th centuries, which was the residence of the abbots of the monastery of Santa Maria de Lavaix and where the bell tower stands.

Since 2001 the Església Vella has housed the Col·lecció d'Art Sacre de la Ribagorça, which aims to share part of the cultural and artistic heritage of the comarca. The collection is owned by the Bishopric of Lleida and is managed together with the town council. It brings together painting from the 17th and 18th centuries, sculpture, goldwork and altarpieces. The altarpieces of the Assumption and of Sant Sebastià are the church's original ones; the rest of the pieces come from churches in the Catalan and Aragonese Ribagorza, almost all from the Baroque period.

The sculpture section includes polychrome carved wood and a Romanesque piece, the Mare de Déu de la Mola, from the 12th century. A separate space is devoted to the monastery of Santa Maria de Lavaix, with sculptural and architectural elements donated by private individuals and recovered from the waters of the Escales reservoir through archaeological interventions; the heraldic shield of Pere de Cardona, abbot of the monastery, stands out. The building is also used for concerts, exhibitions and lectures.
