About the museum
The Museu de les Papallones de Catalunya opened on 21 July 2002 in Pujalt (Sort), on the initiative of its founders Alfons G. Dolsa and Maria Teresa Albarrán. After various difficulties, the museum and its entire scientific and bibliographic holdings moved to Ribera de Cardós, in the Vall de Cardós, where it reopened on 26 June 2018.
The core of the museum is a scientific collection that grew out of a study of the distribution of butterfly populations in Catalonia, begun in 1971, and which now exceeds 30,000 specimens. The museum considers it one of the four reference collections in Catalonia. The exhibition showed some 4,400 specimens alongside displays on invasive insects, the largest butterfly in the world, a unique butterfly discovered in Andorra and a 510-million-year-old fossil.
With its 25th anniversary in 2027 in view, the founders acquired an estate in La Pobla de Segur in order to build a larger site, with a main hall, a scientific area and laboratory, and an extensive library specialising in lepidopterology. The museum has left its Ribera de Cardós site and, according to its website, the works are still in progress and the new facilities will open soon.
