About the museum
The museum occupies the site of the former Pujol i Bausis factory, popularly known as La Rajoleta, which produced architectural ceramics and played a prominent role during Catalan Modernisme. Its kilns produced tiles and other pieces that decorate buildings declared World Heritage Sites, such as the Hospital de Sant Pau and Park Güell. The factory supplied materials for the work of Antoni Gaudí and other Modernist architects, such as Domènech i Montaner, Gallissà and Puig i Cadafalch.
The complex preserves five types of ceramic kilns. The most striking are the large bottle kilns, the only ones of this type left in Spain and among the few surviving in Europe. There is also an open kiln, a metal reverberatory kiln and six Arab-type kilns, including two exceptional examples buried nine metres deep.
The site can only be visited with a guide. The route explains the history of the factory, its technological development and the artistic importance of its production. The place currently has a provisional character and awaits an architectural and museological intervention. About 200 metres away is the Museu de Can Tinturé, devoted to displays of tiles, and both museums together keep alive the ceramic tradition of Esplugues de Llobregat.
