About the museum
The importance of the city's heritage holdings and, in particular, its remarkable collection of contemporary art was one of the reasons, in the 1970s, for creating the Museu de L'Hospitalet, which opened in 1972 as a local museum. Since then it has been responsible for conserving and promoting the cultural and material heritage of the city and for making known its past, its present and its plans for the future.
To house it, the town council chose a representative building, the Casa Espanya: a 16th-century farmhouse built by the Llunell family, which later passed to the Molinès and finally to the Espanya family. After its restoration in 1969, the town council acquired it in 1970 to turn it into a municipal cultural facility, and in 1975 the building was declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (protected site of national cultural interest). The museum has been listed in the Catalan Museum Register since 1996 and has public gardens.
The collections are very varied: abundant ethnographic and historical holdings, with pieces of traditional popular culture, rural life and the technological legacy of the city's industrialisation; a collection of Renaissance religious altarpieces; and 20th-century works that form an important contemporary art collection. The museum makes its heritage known through exhibitions on varied themes and carries out ongoing restoration work on altarpieces, contemporary art and works on paper. In addition to the Casa Espanya, it uses L'Harmonia as an exhibition venue.
