About the museum
The Museu de Geologia “Valentí Masachs” of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) is located in the Escola Politècnica Superior d’Enginyeria de Manresa. It was founded in 1980, and its first director was Dr Valentí Masachs Alavedra. Its first mineralogy and palaeontology display cases were set up with his private collection of fossils and minerals and with samples collected by members of the team.
In 1993 display cases on the applications of minerals were added, opening a new stage in the teaching offer for students and teachers at all levels, completed in 1995 with new displays on the usefulness of stone materials. In mid-2007 a direct entrance was opened from Carrer Bernat de Cabrera to the “Área de Reflexión”, which addresses resource scarcity, radioactivity and the relationship between minerals and people.
Today the holdings comprise around 5,000 minerals, 2,000 rocks and 3,000 fossils, gathered mainly by the team itself, with donated private collections, exchanges and some purchases. Among the most notable collections are those of Josep Lluís Serch (1983), Carles Curto (1991), Josep Closas (1997) and Jaume Serrate (2002). The museum functions as an open classroom for students, teachers and the general public, and offers technical consultations and geological field trips.
