About the museum
The Museu Arqueològic i Paleontològic de Moià, in the Moianès, holds most of the archaeological and palaeontological remains found in the Cova del Toll, in the Cova de les Teixoneres and in several dolmens in the region. It is part of the Coves del Toll complex, which is visited together with the prehistoric park: the guided entry to the Cova del Toll includes free access to the museum.
The permanent exhibition is organised in four areas: the fossils of marine organisms that inhabited the Moianès about 38 million years ago, during the Eocene; the Quaternary fauna, with the cave bear as the main figure alongside the cave lion, the woolly rhinoceros and other carnivores and herbivores; the material culture of the Neolithic and the Bronze Age, with pottery, stone tools, bone industry and metal objects; and human remains, since the cave served both as a domestic space and as a burial place. Some bodies are displayed in re-creations of the funerary contexts in which they were found.
The museum shares a building on Carrer de Rafael Casanova with the Casa Museu Rafael Casanova, which occupies the first floor and recalls the childhood in Moià of Rafael Casanova, the Barcelona councillor who was born there in 1660 and was a leading figure in the defence of the city during the siege of 1714. About 7.5 km away, on the N-141c road, are the Cova del Toll (1,148 metres long) and the Parc Prehistòric, with replicas of four Neolithic huts; in the nearby Cova de les Teixoneres, Neanderthal remains have been excavated since 2003.
