About the museum

The Museu de la Farmàcia Catalana was created in 1957 by Dr Jesús Isamat Vila (Olot, 1895 – Barcelona, 1981), professor of the History of Pharmacy at the University of Barcelona, under the name Biblioteca-Museo de Historia de la Farmacia Catalana (Library-Museum of the History of Catalan Pharmacy). He conceived it as an auxiliary annex to the seminar on the History of Pharmacy, and its premises were opened in the 1957–1958 academic year together with the new building of the Faculty of Pharmacy on the Pedralbes campus.

Lack of space has led the museum to install part of its display cases in the corridors and stairwells of the faculty, so that students and teachers encounter it in their daily life. Its historic holdings exceed two thousand objects, not counting the collection of old pharmaceutical specialities and the pharmaceutical advertising posters, which are two of its most emblematic collections.

Among the pieces are a cordialero (pharmacy cabinet) from an 18th-century apothecary's shop, pharmaceutical ceramics from the 17th to the 20th centuries, albarelos (ceramic drug jars) with parsley-leaf decoration, precision scales, mortars, stills and instruments from the faculty's former laboratories, as well as furniture from the former Colegio de San Victoriano, the first institution to teach official pharmacy studies in Catalonia (1815–1843). One of the most valuable pieces is the “Concòrdia de Barcelona” (1511), the oldest pharmacopoeia of the former kingdoms of Spain, of which a facsimile is displayed.
