About the museum

The Museu de la Història de Fontcoberta was founded in 1996 on the initiative of the town council to preserve and display material evidence of the municipality's history. Its seat is Can Jan, a masia in the veïnat (hamlet) of la Farrès, documented since 1201, which the town council acquired in 1987 after years of neglect in order to turn it into a cultural house and museum.

The initial holdings brought together archaeological remains found in sites within the municipal area, with material from the Palaeolithic, Iberian, Roman and medieval periods, and a collection of pendulum clocks and other clocks by local craftsmen and of European origin. Temporary exhibitions on a range of themes were also held.

Today Can Jan is municipally owned, houses the town council's offices and presents itself as a space open to cultural activity. It hosts a permanent exhibition on the Platja d'Espolla, a singular temporary lagoon in the municipality that forms part of the lake basin of the Estany de Banyoles and is the habitat of the crustacean Triops cancriformis.
