Museu de la Xocolata de Barcelona

About the museum

The Museu de la Xocolata de Barcelona is an initiative of the Barcelona Pastry Guild (Gremio de Pastelería de Barcelona). It offers a route from the origin of cacao to the legend, history, tradition and craft of Catalan confectionery and chocolate-making, and it champions Barcelona as the capital of chocolate.

It is housed in the former convent of Sant Agustí, in the Born district, a building of great historic and heritage value built in the 14th century. The convent was closely linked to the city and its guilds until it was partly destroyed during the War of the Spanish Succession and became a military barracks. In 1980 Barcelona City Council recovered the space and assigned it to educational, social and cultural bodies, among them the Pastry Guild Foundation.

The permanent exhibition covers around 600 m² and shows the history of cacao and its arrival in the city, industrial development and the rise of artistic work with chocolate. It recalls the role of the port of Barcelona in the distribution of cacao from the 16th century, the 18th-century mills and the large factories of the 19th century. It brings together a collection of chocolate figures, including recent works such as the elephant with which Lluc Crusellas won the World Chocolate Masters 2022. The museum also offers workshops, tastings, a bean-to-bar workshop and a tasting area with café and shop.
