About the museum

The Museu Europeu d'Art Modern (MEAM) opened to the public in June 2011 in the former Palau Gomis, on Calle Barra de Ferro, a few metres from the Museu Picasso. It is a private initiative of the Fundació de les Arts i els Artistes, created and directed by the architect José Manuel Infiesta, who bought the building in 2006 to house his artistic project.

The palace was completely rebuilt in 1792 by the wealthy textile merchant Gomis, at a time when Calle Montcada was the city's most noble street. During the Napoleonic invasion it served as the residence of Marshal Lecchi. With the opening of Calle Princesa, the building was split in two, and at the beginning of the 20th century the Modernist doorway was built, unique in Ciutat Vella. The later restoration of the principal floor received the FAD interior design award, and the architect Jordi Garcés directed the restoration of the courtyard and the floors.

The museum is devoted to figurative art created by living artists. Its own collection includes nearly a thousand works by artists from all five continents, as well as modern sculpture and 20th-century Catalan sculpture. There are also temporary exhibitions, concert cycles, painting and sculpture courses and educational workshops.
