About the museum
The Museu Memorial de l'Exili (MUME) was created to commemorate the Republican exile at the same border crossing through which most of the exiles fled in 1939. Construction ran from 2000 until December 2007, when it opened. La Jonquera town council sought a museum project rooted in the town's history and, with advice from the Museu d'Història de Catalunya, decided to focus on a single theme: exile.
The museum is run by a public consortium formed by La Jonquera town council, the Generalitat de Catalunya, the Consell Comarcal de l'Alt Empordà and the University of Girona. As well as exhibiting, it carries out research and dissemination together with the university, and it helped to create the Walter Benjamin Chair, Memory and Exile.
The permanent exhibition traces the phenomenon of exile, the war, the defeat and retreat of 1939, the diaspora, the experience of exile and its legacy, with testimonies, documents and the Josep Narro Fund. Temporary exhibitions and activities are programmed each year within the Art i Memòria cycle, and the museum organises guided visits and routes through the places of exile in the region.
