About the museum
The Teatre-Museu Dalí opened in 1974 in Figueres, the artist’s home town. It occupies the building of the former municipal theatre, which had been destroyed by fire. Salvador Dalí conceived and personally designed it as a great surrealist work, to the point that the foundation presents it as the largest surrealist object in the world.
The route is conceived as a theatrical ensemble. Rooms 1 to 18 form the original museum, around the central courtyard and dome, and mix paintings, sculptures, installations and objects devised by Dalí. Rooms 19 to 22 are devoted to temporary exhibitions, and rooms 23 and 24 display the jewellery designed by the artist.
In the final years of his life and after his death, new spaces were added, such as the Crypt, the Galatea Tower and the Dalí Joies rooms. The collection brings together more than 1,500 pieces of painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, stereoscopic works, installations, holograms and photography, as well as works by other artists whom Dalí admired. Together with the Casa Salvador Dalí in Portlligat and the Gala Dalí Castle in Púbol, the Theatre-Museum forms the so-called Dalinian Triangle, managed by the Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí.
