About the museum
Bricks have been made in Almvik since the early 17th century, until the works closed in 1971. The clay was first taken from a promontory in Almviken and later from Lake Bleken, and in the 20th century it was carried down to the works by Gamlebyviken on a steam-powered cableway. The water of the Almviksån river powered the works until the 1940s, when operations were electrified, and production was done by craft methods with simple mechanical aids until the end.
The works and industrial environment are of national interest (riksintresse) because the plant has remained in the same condition as when it was closed. On the site are the large drying shed, the kiln, the mill, the sawmill and the carpentry shop, and the last cableway pylon has been rebuilt. The industrial area belongs to the Blekhem estate.
The museum is run by the association Almviks Tegelbruks Vänner (Friends of Almvik Brickworks) and opened in 1998. Visitors can take a guided tour that explains the stages of production and the machinery, watch a short documentary film in the museum's film room, or explore the area on their own.
