About the museum
The Biologiska museet in Södertälje opened in 1913 and is the town’s oldest museum. The Art Nouveau (jugendstil) building was erected with funds donated by the patron Carl Fredrik Liljevalch and was designed by the architect Hjalmar Cederström. The museum was originally meant as a study collection for two nearby schools, but the general public was also welcome.
The exhibition shows mammals and birds from Sörmland in their natural habitats. Gustaf Kolthoff built up the museum with all the stuffed animals and birds, and his son Kjell Kolthoff painted the lifelike dioramas that still fascinate visitors today. The museum was renovated and reopened in 1983, and since then it has been run by Torekällbergets museum, which is owned by Södertälje municipality.
According to the municipality’s website the museum is closed pending renovation, and no reopening date has been given.
