About the museum

The Ekonomiska museet – Kungliga myntkabinettet (Economic Museum – Royal Coin Cabinet) has its roots in the 16th century, when the royal chancery gathered old Swedish coins. The collection grew through finds and gifts during the 17th and 18th centuries and came to be owned by the Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities (Vitterhetsakademien). The first public exhibition of coins and medals in Sweden opened in 1846 in the Ridderstolpska huset (Ridderstolpe House) on Skeppsbron.

The Myntkabinettet later moved to the newly built Nationalmuseum and then, in 1938, to new premises at Narvavägen and Storgatan on Östermalm, in the same building as the Historiska museet. In the 1980s cooperation began with Sveriges sparbanker (the Swedish savings banks) on an economic museum, the first of its kind in Europe.

The collection today consists of about 650,000 objects, among them 450,000 coins, but also banknotes, medals, share certificates and other objects with numismatic or financial-historical links. Since the reopening in June 2024, two permanent exhibitions have been on show, PENGAR! and Ekonomilabbet, which have been awarded several international design prizes. The museum is part of the agency Statens historiska museer and shares a building and a ticket with the Historiska museet.
