About the museum

Finngrundet, lightship no. 25, was built in Gävle in 1903 and was in service for over sixty years. During the ice-free part of the year the ship lay at anchor in the southern Bothnian Sea and marked the fairway with its light. With a red hull and white letters along the side, she followed the international rules for lightships and was a well-known sight for seafarers.

The crew consisted of eight men who served in shifts and could spend many weeks on board in a row. Life was regimented and often monotonous, and free time was spent on, among other things, woodwork and fishing. The ship is 31 metres long and 6.85 metres wide, and the light's range was about 11 nautical miles.

When technology developed in the second half of the 20th century, the lightships were replaced by unmanned fixed lighthouses. Finngrundet was taken out of service in 1969 and became a museum ship the following year. She now lies at the Sjöhistoriska's ship pier together with the icebreaker Sankt Erik. For events and tours, Sjöhistoriska works with, among others, the Svenska fyrsällskapet (Swedish Lighthouse Society).
