About the museum
Gällersta forngård is a local heritage farm in Gällersta parish in Örebro Municipality. The site has been a meeting place for celebrations and gatherings since the early 20th century, and the local historian Johan Lindström Saxon, who wrote the song about Elvira Madigan, took the initiative for the old farm. The land donated by Frisagården in Attersta in 1908 went to the Gällersta patriotic association, which later became Gällersta Forngårdsförening (Gällersta Old Farm Association).
In 1927 an assembly hall was built, and afterwards several buildings were moved here from various places in Närke, including a farmhouse, a soldier’s cottage and a windmill. The site also includes the Svalgångsboden from 1925, the Mjölnarstugan (Miller’s Cottage) from the early 19th century, Linpörtet and the Närke Stone, where outstanding people from Närke have their names carved.
The farm association carries on traditional local heritage work, looking after and preserving its museum collections, and arranges study circles, courses and annual events. The most traditional is the children’s party on 28 December, held since the 1910s. The Midsummer celebration in its present form began in 1952 and draws several thousand visitors, and for some years a Christmas market has also been held on the first Sunday of Advent.
