About the museum
Örebro läns museum has its origins in an antiquarian association formed in 1856. Two associations merged in 1910 under the present name. Since 1978 the museum has been run by Stiftelsen Örebro läns museum (the Örebro County Museum Foundation), and since 1990 Region Örebro län has financed the activities after taking over from Örebro municipality.
The museum building at Engelbrektsgatan 3 began construction in 1948. The art hall opened in 1950, and the whole museum was inaugurated in 1963. The building has been closed for a comprehensive renovation since 2018, and the museum aims to reopen towards the end of 2027. The contractor is expected to hand over the building in December 2026.
In the meantime the museum works from several places in the county. Exhibitions are produced in the travelling Mobila museet (Mobile Museum), which visits fairs, schools and squares, and the museum app contains digital walks and quizzes about historic places. The museum also manages the visitor sites Siggebohyttans bergsmansgård (Siggebohyttan ironworks farm) and Arbetarmuseet Gråbo (Gråbo Workers’ Museum).
