About the museum
Guitars – the Museum opened at the end of January 2014, when Umeå was the European Capital of Culture. The museum is on the top floor of Umeå Folkets Hus, a brick building from 1904 that previously housed Vasaskolan, and shares the building with, among others, a rock club, a restaurant, a music shop and a record shop. The project was run jointly by the people behind the music shop 4Sound and the rock club Scharinska.
The collection was built up by the twin brothers Samuel and Michael Åhdén, born in 1956 in northern Sweden. Their interest began with old American cars and grew into collecting guitars, amplifiers and other items from the breakthrough years of rock. Today the collection comprises over 500 guitars, mainly electric guitars from the 1950s and 1960s, as well as amplifiers, drums, jukeboxes and other objects from the same period.
One highlight is a rare Fender Broadcaster, one of about 200 that were made. The museum also has a bar, Museibaren, with live performances on some Saturdays.
