About the museum
Umedalen was built in the 1930s as a hospital area, but operations were closed down, and in 1987 the area was sold by Västerbottens läns landsting (Västerbotten County Council) to Balticgruppen, today Fort Knox. The company wanted to give the area new content and, together with Galleri Andersson/Sandström, started the art project Umedalen Skulptur. The gallery was responsible for the artistic content and Fort Knox for the financing.
The first exhibition was held in summer 1994 and was a great success. Exhibitions were then held every summer until the turn of the millennium, and from 2000 the project became a biennial that ran every other year until 2012. Almost two hundred Swedish and international artists have shown works in the park.
Fort Knox has bought many of the sculptures, which have become a permanent collection in the park. It comprises about forty-four works by, among others, Miroslaw Balka, Louise Bourgeois, Tony Cragg, Antony Gormley, Anish Kapoor and Clay Ketter. The park is a wholly privately financed initiative, open to everyone around the clock, all year round and free of charge, and it is visited by around 20,000 people every summer.
