About the museum
Hässelby trädgårds- och hembygdsmuseum opened in October 1985 in the garden suburb's former municipal hall on Riddersviksvägen, next to Hässelby villastads kyrka (church). The initiative was taken in the early 1980s, after Hässelby hembygdsförening (local heritage society) had been formed in 1978.
The building was constructed in 1925 and served as the municipal hall for Hässelby villastad until 1949, when the township (köpingen) became part of the City of Stockholm. It also housed a police station and a post office. From 1950 the building was used as a school, among other things, but it fell into disrepair until it was restored in the mid-1980s.
The permanent exhibition shows objects and pictures from the past in Hässelby villastad, Hässelby strand and Hässelby gård. One room is devoted to the suburb's commercial nurseries, another to the citizens' fire brigade (borgarbrandkåren), and a third to local history objects in general. In the basement there is a shoemaker's workshop, a carpenter's workshop, a police cell and a laundry in a former cell. Five exhibition dolls were designed by Per-Erik Willö. The house also holds an archive with documents, books, photographs and maps.
