About the museum

Hagalunds tvätterimuseum is located on the northern shore of Albysjön in Vårby, a short walk from Masmo metro station. The Johansson family lived in the building from 1905 to 1920 and ran a laundry here for customers in central Stockholm; the laundry was dropped off and collected by horse and cart. There were many laundries in the area, and the last one closed in the 1960s.

The museum was created by the artist Olle Magnusson, who in the 1970s was active in the resistance to planned motorways in the Vårby–Fittja area and in 1984 helped to form Vårby-Fittja hembygdsförening (local heritage society). The museum turned 30 in 2024 and is run by the local heritage society.

The collection comprises washing machines, flat irons and other equipment that belong to the history of laundering. The museum describes itself as a living museum: on byk days the laundry is boiled in a large iron pot with lye, lye-washed, beaten, rinsed in the lake and hung out to dry on washing lines, as it was a hundred years ago. Music and dance programmes and art byk are also arranged.
