About the museum
Loftahammars hembygdsförening (Loftahammar Local Heritage Society) was formed on 5 September 1947 and the same year bought the windmill at Aleglo for SEK 500, while the association also gained the right of use of the land. In 1967 two families donated the land to the association. The mill is of Dutch type, was built in 1851 and was in operation until 1932. The sails were blown apart in 1988, and from 1991 a major repair was carried out with a new gångås (main beam) and new sails.
The local heritage site lies on top of the village of Aleglo. In 1978 a storehouse was moved there from Bolagsgården in Tångered, and it eventually became the association’s museum. On the upper floor lie the commons boat (markensbåt) Teresia and a small tjustöka (Tjust-type boat), while the ground floor is filled with folk tools and fishing gear.
Behind the museum stands the ryggås cottage (ryggåsstuga) Torsborg, which was moved in one piece from Loftahammar village in 1986 after Västervik Municipality gave it to the association. The cottage is used as a coffee cottage.
