About the museum
Rågö lies in the inner Tjust archipelago outside Loftahammar. The village probably came into being when the population increased at the end of the 1400s and the beginning of the 1500s, and the lack of arable land on the mainland made people take new land in the archipelago. At its height there were three farms on the island, and the inhabitants lived by livestock husbandry and fishing. Kalvö and Horsö were used for several hundred years as pasture and hay meadows by the people of Rågö.
The island has had no permanent residents for half a century, but the buildings are largely intact. By the harbour there is a net-drying ground (notvarv) and two log boathouses (timrade sjöbodar) from the 1700s. The whole nature reserve is owned by the state through Naturvårdsverket (the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency).
In the village, the archipelago museum shows objects, photographs and stories about life in the Tjust archipelago in earlier times, with fishing, farming and shipping as part of everyday life. The association Tjust Allmogebåtar has a boatyard on the island where old Tjust boats are restored and displayed.
