About the museum
Ivar Lo-museet is an author museum dedicated to Ivar Lo-Johansson, one of Sweden's best-known worker writers. He wrote over 55 books during a writing career of roughly sixty years, and he depicted, among other things, the conditions of the statare (contract farm labourers), the move from countryside to town, and Sweden's road from poverty to welfare state.
The museum opened in 1991, about a year after the author's death, and is run by Ivar Lo-sällskapet (the Ivar Lo Society). It is set up in his former work flat, four floors up in the residential building at Bastugatan 21 on Södermalm, to which he moved in 1934. The house was built in 1930–1932 to designs by the architect Sam Kjellberg.
The flat has kept much of its historical character, as the interior did not change much during the years the author worked here. The museum shows where and how Ivar Lo-Johansson wrote. Opposite the house lies Ivar Los park. The society also publishes a booklet on the author's work every year.
