About the museum
Bellmanhuset is at Urvädersgränd 3 on Södermalm in Stockholm. After the Katarina fire of 1723, a stone house was built on the site during the 1720s, and the house was extended in the 1760s so that it was largely finished by the autumn of 1764. Carl Michael Bellman moved in as a tenant in 1770 and lived there until 1774; here he wrote the greater part of Fredmans epistlar (Fredman’s Epistles).
The Wennerqvist family owned the house from 1850. Bellman researcher Gunnar Bolin rediscovered the link between Bellman and the house in the mid-1930s. The Order Par Bricole bought the house in 1938, and it was opened to the public on 4 February 1940. The house was designated a listed building (byggnadsminne) in 1969.
Visitors see the two attic rooms where Bellman lived, restored in a period style. It is the only one of Bellman’s many homes that survives. The tour also tells of Stockholm in the 18th century, of Bellman’s life and works, of the history of the house and of Par Bricole, and a troubadour performs some of the epistles and songs.
