About the museum
Elin Wägner received De Nios stora pris (De Nio's Grand Prize) in 1923, and with the prize money she bought a piece of pasture land on the outskirts of the village of Berg, where her maternal uncle Alfred Ekedahl was vicar. She had her Småland cottage built to designs by the architect Carl Bergsten. The house was first a summer home but became her permanent residence and a fixed base for a woman who often travelled for peace, women's rights and the environment. On the plot there is also a writing cottage designed by the glass artist Simon Gate.
After Elin Wägner's death the house passed by inheritance and changed owners several times. When it was sold again in the early 1990s, the Stiftelsen Elin Wägners Lilla Björka (Elin Wägner's Lilla Björka Foundation) was formed, and it bought the property in 1995 after a fundraising campaign. The house became a protected building in 1996 and has been restored in stages; several rooms, including the living room and the study, have been returned to their original condition.
Today Lilla Björka functions as a person museum and meeting place, with public tours in summer, author talks, exhibitions and a residency for writers. The foundation is responsible for the upkeep of the house and garden.
