About the museum
Hjärtenholms gård is an outlying farm (utgård) of Engaholm manor and lies a couple of kilometers north of Alvesta. The farm was formed in the mid-1830s, when three of the estate’s farms (frälsegårdar) in the village of Hjärtanäs were demolished and moved to create a single, unified farming unit. The stone cowshed was built in the 1870s, and the dwelling house and storehouse were added about ten years later. The name combines Engaholm and Hjärtanäs.
The farm was a large workplace with 100 hectares of arable land and 129 hectares of forest. The work was carried out by day laborers from the surrounding crofts, permanent farm workers and statare (tenant farmhands), who were paid in produce. The farm was leased out for long periods, and the last tenant family left the operation in 1965 because profitability was too poor.
A local initiative from the farmers’ cooperative led to the farm site being bought and a museum foundation being formed to care for the county’s agrarian cultural heritage. The buildings were restored with state labor-market funds, and Kronobergs lantbruksmuseum (Kronoberg County Agricultural Museum) opened in summer 1972. When the foundation ceased in 1979, its assets were transferred to Smålands museum, today part of Kulturparken Småland. The museum shows how farmers’ working conditions changed with industrialization.
