About the museum
Orrefors Museum shows the historic glass collection of the Orrefors glassworks. The works began as an ironworks in 1726 and became one of Sweden’s best-known glassworks. Crystal production began in 1914, and the artists Simon Gate and Edward Hald were employed in 1916–1917 and made both art glass and utility glass (bruksglas). Orrefors’ international breakthrough came at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1925.
The glassworks closed in December 2012. As early as 2009 the economic association Glasrikets Skatter (Treasures of the Glass Realm) had been formed, when the collection was threatened with being sold off on the international market. The association bought the collections and archive material from Orrefors Kosta Boda and is owned by nearly 200 members, of whom Nybro Municipality and Södra are the largest.
The collection comprises several thousand objects as well as sketches and photographs, and is partly shown in the museum’s exhibition hall. The exhibitions are renewed regularly and show the creative power of the artists and the craftsmanship of the glassworkers. Each year the association organises exhibitions and events at the museum, and the work relies largely on voluntary commitment.
