About the museum
Scenkonstmuseet is a state museum of music, theatre and dance and is part of the agency Statens musikverk (Swedish National Music Board). It is the latest in a series of institutions that have collected and shown Swedish music and theatre culture. Its predecessor was called the Musik- och teatermuseet (Music and Theatre Museum), and in 2010 the collections of the Marionettmuseet (Puppetry Museum) and the Sveriges Teatermuseum (Swedish Theatre Museum) were brought into its operations.
Since 1979 the museum has been at Sibyllegatan 2 in Östermalm, next to the Kungliga Hovstallet (Royal Stables). The building dates from the 17th century and previously housed, among other things, the Kronobageriet (Crown Bakery); it is a nationally protected listed building and is counted as one of the oldest surviving industrial buildings in northern Europe.
The collection comprises nearly 50,000 objects, including set and costume sketches, stage costumes, dolls and masks, and an instrument collection of over 6,000 instruments, the oldest from the early 17th century. Most of it is kept in storage, and a selection is shown in the main exhibition På Scen and in temporary exhibitions. The museum also has a studio where children can build their own instruments and masks.
