About the museum
Stockholm had trams from 1877, first horse-drawn and from 1901 electric. The tram service was closed in 1967 in connection with the switch to right-hand traffic, and most of the cars were scrapped. A few were given a refuge with the Svenska Spårvägssällskapet or the Spårvägsmuseet.
In the late 1980s it was decided to build a tramway for museum traffic between Norrmalmstorg and Waldemarsudde, part of the former line 7. Traffic started in June 1991 with preserved Stockholm trams, supplemented by veteran trams from Gothenburg. The route is 3,200 metres long. Until 2010 the line was served only by the museum trams, but since then SL's modern Spårväg City also runs there, and the line has been extended in stages to T-Centralen.
On assignment from Region Stockholm, Djurgårdslinjen shows Stockholm's tramway history with historic trams at weekends and in summer. The operation is owned by the non-profit association Svenska Spårvägssällskapet, founded in 1959, and is run entirely by volunteers from the association's Stockholm branch. The oldest trams are from the early 20th century and the youngest from the mid-1950s. At their peak the old trams carried about 11,000 passengers in a day. Besides line 7N, museum traffic also runs on the Lidingöbanan.
