About the museum
Skepplanda hemvärns- och kulturförening (Skepplanda Home Guard and Culture Association) was formed on 19 November 2001 by a group of former Home Guard members. The Home Guard district was to be closed down, and so that the building owned by the Home Guard association would not fall into disrepair, plans were made for a military history museum. The Home Guard district was closed on 1 January 2004, and the museum was then built up in the former Home Guard premises. It was opened on 12 June 2007.
The museum aims to show more recent military history and the era of the Home Guard from 1939 to 1989. The collections include uniforms, weapons, vehicles, motorcycles and bicycles, including a bicycle stretcher (cykelbår), as well as communications equipment and field camp equipment. There are also older means of transport such as skis and cars used from the 1930s onwards.
To generate income for operations, in 2005 the association started a display group in uniforms of model M/39 or M/41. The group takes part with a field kitchen wagon (kokvagn), a bicycle infantry group and military vehicles at markets, exhibitions and holidays.
