About the museum
The Bohlenständerhaus in the Amriswil district of Schrofen dates from 1538 and is considered one of the last surviving examples of this early farm construction in the canton of Thurgau. The walls consist of thick wooden planks inserted between vertical posts. Typical of the period is this simple smallholder's house, where living, working and self-sufficiency were closely packed together.
A separate foundation was set up to preserve the house. After extensive restoration, the house opened as a museum in 1989. The living section contains a furnished living room (Stube), the kitchen, a sleeping chamber and a weaving cellar; together they show how meager the life of the smallholders was, who fed themselves largely from the farm garden.
The barn on the property hosts temporary exhibitions and cultural events. On the museum Sundays, regular events under the motto “Läbe, wohne, schaffe – vo 1538 bis hüt” invite visitors on a journey through time through history, tradition and culture.
