About the museum

The artillery positions of Mondascia south of Biasca were built in 1940/41 on the left bank of the Ticino, about 305 meters above sea level and built into the rock. With their fire they were to support the LONA defensive line between Lodrino and Osogna, which blocked the valley floor in the south of the Riviera. Originally equipped with 7.5 cm guns, the facility later received 12 cm cannons and, from 1954, a 10.5 cm howitzer on a lever carriage.

The fortress was in military use until the 1990s and was released from the army in 1994. It is regarded as the only significant artillery work of the LONA line that has been preserved in working order and with its original weapons, and is classified in the inventory of military structures as an object of national importance.

A group of volunteers took over the facility, prepared it for visitors and converted the former ammunition depot into the museum, which opened in 1999. It shows the soldiers' daily life with dormitories, kitchen and communication equipment, as well as weapons, equipment and vehicles. The museum is run by the association FOR.TI (Opere Fortificate del Cantone Ticino), which also looks after other bunker complexes in the canton.
