About the museum
La Congiunta stands on the northern edge of the village of Giornico in the Leventina valley, between the River Ticino and the railway line. The building was constructed between 1989 and 1992 to plans by the architect Peter Märkli, together with Stefan Bellwalder, as a home for the work of the Zurich sculptor Hans Josephsohn. The Stiftung La Congiunta supports the museum, which opened in 1992.
The long, narrow, three-part building of exposed concrete has no windows; light enters only through a skylight strip, and there is no artificial light. It houses Josephsohn's two most important groups of works. In the first room hang flat reliefs, in the second reliefs that project further into the space, and in the third stand the half-figures. The works on display date from between 1950 and 1991.
Visitors collect the key at the Osteria in the village centre and walk upstream over two old stone bridges, past the early Romanesque church of San Nicola. In 1995 the building was awarded a prize for new building in the Alps.
