About the museum
Fotostiftung Schweiz was founded in 1971 as a non-profit private-law foundation. It primarily collects photographic works related to Switzerland, from the beginnings of photography to the present day and from art to documentary, applied and private photography. On behalf of the Federal Office of Culture, it also looks after around 160 archives of important photographers.
In Winterthur, the foundation regularly shows historical and contemporary positions in Swiss photography, publishes books and runs the Bildarchiv Online database. Together with Fotomuseum Winterthur, it operates the Fotozentrum on Grüzenstrasse, which includes a public specialist library, the museum shop and Bistro George.
In January 2026, the foundation announced a multi-year realignment: collection and archive work as well as digitisation will be strengthened, and from 2027 it intends to focus its exhibition activities more on venues outside its own premises. Since spring 2026, operational management has been in the hands of a leadership team. The exhibition on Andri Pol runs until 6 December 2026.
