About the museum
The Waaghaus on Marktgasse was built in 1503 as a weighing house for merchants. After Winterthur was connected to the railway in 1855, it was put to many uses; until 1915 the upper floor housed the collection of the Kunstverein Winterthur, before that moved into the new museum building.
Since 1980 the Kunsthalle Winterthur has operated its rooms here on the third floor, opened with an exhibition by Max Bill. It has no collection of its own; instead, it shows five to six changing exhibitions of contemporary art each year, by international artists and artists from Winterthur.
The institution is run by an association with an eight-member board and is supported by the canton of Zurich, the city of Winterthur, foundations and a friends' association. It is headed by Geraldine Tedder. Because the Waaghaus is being renovated, the program takes place at other venues in Winterthur until December 2026, such as Museum Schaffen, the reading room of the Kunst Museum und Naturmuseum Winterthur, and the CAMPO.
