About the museum
Villa Flora was built in 1846 and renovated in the Art Nouveau style in 1908 by the architects Rittmeyer and Furrer. It was the home of Hedy Hahnloser-Bühler (1873–1952) and Arthur Hahnloser (1870–1936), who were enthusiastic about the art of their time from an early stage.
Between 1906 and 1936 the collector couple assembled works of Post-Impressionism, the Nabis artist group and the Fauves, as well as works by contemporary Swiss artists such as Ferdinand Hodler and Giovanni Giacometti. Close friendships linked the Hahnlosers with artists such as Félix Vallotton and Pierre Bonnard; the villa became a meeting place for artists and art lovers.
The former collection, united in the Hahnloser/Jaeggli Foundation, includes masterpieces by Manet, Cézanne, van Gogh, Redon, Matisse and Toulouse-Lautrec, among others. Their descendants founded the foundation in 1980; today it owns 104 paintings, 110 original works on paper, 195 printed graphic works and 21 sculptures. House, collection and garden are regarded as cultural property of international importance. Villa Flora is one of the three venues of the Kunst Museum Winterthur.
