About the museum
The Association for the Davos Local History Museum was founded on 26 April 1935 after an arithmetic book more than a hundred years old, containing valuable information about old Davos, came to light. The aim was to collect Davos cultural heritage and preserve it for posterity. In 1942 the association moved into the Grosses Jenatschhaus on Museumstrasse and has run a publicly accessible museum there ever since.
The house was built in the 16th century for the Beeli family. In 1650 it was bought by the son of the Graubünden politician Jürg Jenatsch, who converted it into a stately town house, creating the beautiful panelled rooms. In 1740 it passed into municipal ownership and served as a benefice house and later as a schoolhouse; in 1879 it was auctioned off and used as a tenement until the association acquired it in 1937.
Around the house are grouped a coach house with the Flüela mail coach, a Walser granary and a mill with a working grinding mechanism that has been milling regularly since 1951. In 2015 a bakehouse built to original plans was added. Since 2013 a presentation room has been devoted to recent history and the World Economic Forum. The collection traces the path from a Walser farming village to a tourism and congress destination.
