About the museum
The Wintersportmuseum Davos opened in 1992. It is run by an association that has been gathering exhibits and collecting stories from eyewitnesses and locals for more than three decades. The core collection consists of winter sports equipment and documents from the foundation of the Jürg Kaufmann family, as well as the archive of the Hockey Club Davos.
The museum is centrally located in the former post office building on the Promenade in Davos Platz and shows the development of winter sports from its beginnings to the present in two rooms. The first room is devoted to skiing, from early hunting skis through jumping and cross-country skis to snowboards, and to the development of the downhill ski between 1880 and 2000. The second room covers figure skating, speed skating, ice hockey and curling, as well as sleds and bobsleds.
The stories told include how the first ski came to Davos as a gift from a Norwegian patient to the doctor Carl Spengler, what lies behind the famous Davos sled, how bobsled runs led down to Klosters, and how the Spengler Cup came about. Also on show are crystal globes of Davos World Cup winners and a trophy donated by Arthur Conan Doyle. The museum is recognized by the FIS; the Medizinmuseum Davos is in the same building.
