About the museum
The Heimatmuseum Prättigau is located on the first floor of the Kulturhaus Rosengarten, a patrician house in the village centre of Grüsch. The Rosengarten goes back to the noble family von Ott, who had a fortified house built here in the mid-16th century. The name dates from the 19th century, when an inn called “Rosengarten” was set up in the house.
In 1978, twelve co-founders, including Pro Prättigau, the Bündner Heimatschutz and the Verkehrsverein Grüsch, established the Stiftung Haus Rosengarten. Two years later it bought the house to save it from speculation and to develop it into a cultural centre for the valley. Under the large roof, a local history museum, a cultural archive, a library and a cellar theatre were to come together.
The museum is spread over four rooms and is divided into a permanent exhibition and changing themed rooms. The collection comprises around 2,000 objects. The permanent exhibition covers archaeological finds, alpine farming tools, historical toys, everyday ceramics and the crafts of various trades, including a shoemaker’s workshop and textile processing with a 360-degree video on flax.
