About the museum
The Eggahuus on Eggastrasse in Inner-Arosa is one of the oldest houses in the village and is first mentioned in 1550. What the stately building was originally used for is unclear; it differs markedly from the narrow timber houses around it and was probably a meeting place for the villagers, with politics, celebrations and singing taking place in its spacious parlour. Later it housed a guesthouse with a tavern room.
In 1944 the property was acquired from the heirs of Colonel Hans Hold in order to set up a museum there. The local history museum opened in December 1949 on St. Barbara's Day. The former curator Ernst Rahm left a strong mark on its layout and design from the very beginning.
The collection tells how the remote Walser mountain farming village, inhabited year-round since the 13th century, was transformed within roughly 150 years into a world-famous health resort: summer visitors, tuberculosis patients and later athletes shaped this development. On display are everyday farm objects, the parlour with its house organ and harmonium, a weaving room on the upper floor, traditional costumes, natural history with mounted animals, and a winter sports section with skis, sleds and bobsleds more than a hundred years old. Since not everything fits at once, themed exhibitions that change regularly are shown. The house also serves as a venue for lectures and events and is home to the Arosa-Schanfigg cultural archive.
