About the museum
The village museum is located in the former schoolhouse in the middle of the village of Schmitten in the middle Albula valley. The rooms are arranged to show how people in a simple Graubünden mountain village lived, worked and became inventive from the 18th to the early 20th century.
The exhibition is organized into several themes: farm work, crafts, mining, and church traditions and customs. On display are spinning wheels and parlor furniture, for example, but also inventions from the village itself, such as early roller skates by Simon Gruber and the hand-powered snow bicycle “Casperli-Velo.” Two audiovisual slide shows complement the tour: one shows the village changing over time, the other the frescoes of the St. Luzius Chapel.
The museum is only regularly open on a few days in summer and autumn; at other times it is unlocked for visitors after prior telephone registration.
