About the museum

The roots of the house lie in the friendship between the entrepreneur and patron Heinrich Gebert, co-owner of the sanitary company Geberit, and the painter Carl Walter Liner. In the 1950s Gebert began collecting works by Carl August Liner and his son Carl Walter Liner, and in 1997 initiated the “Stiftung Museum Carl Liner Vater und Sohn”. It was renamed Heinrich Gebert Kulturstiftung Appenzell in 2014 and continues to run the museum today.

In 1998 the “Museum Liner Appenzell”, designed by the Zurich architects Annette Gigon and Mike Guyer, opened; the building has been under heritage protection (category B) from the start. Gebert donated parts of his private collection to the foundation in 1998 and in 2003/04, and his wife Myriam Gebert added works from her collection in 2007. Since 2000 there has been a cooperation with the Fondazione Marguerite Arp in Locarno-Solduno.

Today the Kunstmuseum Appenzell shows modern and contemporary art in changing exhibitions, supplemented by presentations from the collection. In 2003 the Kunsthalle, housed in a former brickworks (then Kunsthalle Ziegelhütte, since 2022 Kunsthalle Appenzell), was added; both houses are managed jointly and share a website, team and admission ticket.
