About the museum
The Museum of Life Stories grew out of a percent-for-art project at the Hof Speicher retirement centre: in 2005 the artist H. R. Fricker won the competition with the idea of a "Museum of Life Stories". Together with the newly built retirement and nursing centre, the museum opened in 2006. It is run by an association of its own.
The basic idea: memories are lost when they live only in people's minds. The museum therefore documents life stories and makes them known through exhibitions, talks and conversations. It portrays notable people from the region whose names or achievements are known but whose circumstances are often unknown, as well as "ordinary" people of every level of education and social standing. This also includes coaxing the residents of Hof Speicher into sharing their stories and, with their consent, showing them.
On average two exhibitions are held each year, each accompanied by a printed life story that can also be downloaded free of charge as a PDF. The programme is complemented by storytelling cafés in the lounge of Hof Speicher. In 2009 the museum received a Special Commendation at the European Museum of the Year Award.
