About the museum

In 2021 a modern museum emerged in Gais from the former graphics collection. Since its reopening it has offered a broad range of exhibition content, perspectives and art forms, and looks at the village of Gais on several levels. On 28 March 2022 the association "Museum Gais" was founded; its president is named as the museum's contact person.

The core of the collection goes back to the era of the whey cures (from 1749 until the end of the 19th century). At that time many minor masters came to the village, captured views of Gais and its surroundings, produced copper, steel and wood engravings as well as watercolours, and sold them to spa guests as souvenirs. In this way views of Gais reached large parts of Switzerland and Europe.

Particularly valuable are the pen-and-ink drawings by Johann Ulrich Fitzi (1798–1855), with more than 200 views of Gais from the end of the 18th to the beginning of the 20th century, complemented by prints, watercolours, photographs and a few implements. The showpiece is the panoramas that Fitzi drew between 1840 and 1842 for the innkeeper of the Ox, Salomon Heim: seven partial views of the village's surroundings.
