About the museum
The Kunstverein Frauenfeld took its present form in 1960, more than ten years before the founding of the Kunstmuseum Thurgau, and was at the time the only institution in the cantonal capital showing curated exhibitions. For its work it received the Anerkennungspreis (recognition award) of the City of Frauenfeld in 1983 and the Kulturpreis (cultural award) of the Canton of Thurgau in 1995. It has around 330 members and is run on a voluntary basis.
Its exhibition rooms are on the ground floor of the Bernerhaus (“Haus zur Gedult”), built in 1771, on Bankplatz in the old town. The house once served as the legation house of the Bernese envoys, when Thurgau was still jointly governed by the Swiss confederate states; since 1976 it has belonged to the Evangelische Landeskirche des Kantons Thurgau. Four to six rooms with a total of 175 m² provide space for changing exhibitions of contemporary art.
Besides the exhibitions, the association organizes lectures, discussions and excursions on modern architecture and art. As a reflection of its exhibition activity, it also builds up a collection of contemporary works; it comprises around 500 paintings, graphic works and sculptures, which cannot be shown permanently and can only be seen at occasional collection exhibitions.
