About the museum
Along the village lane Paclera in Sta. Maria, the craft businesses that depended on water power once lined the mountain stream Muranzina: mills, stamping mills, sawmills and forges. In 1676, the municipality first granted the miller Jakob Cott the right to use the water. The mill building is around 350 years old; it takes its name from the last miller, who was called Mall.
Until a few decades ago, the mill was still in operation. Then the wheels were removed, the water channels were filled in and the building was left to decay. On the initiative of Jon Bott, who led the restoration, a foundation and an association, with donations, grants and many volunteers, restored the mill faithfully to its original condition. The wheels have been turning again since 2004.
Two undershot Strauber wheels now drive the mill and the stamping mill; as is usual for mountain mills, the water of the Muranzina is channeled onto the wheels through steep channels. The Muglin Mall is one of the oldest mills in Switzerland still in working order. The owner is the Fundaziun Muglin Mall; the mill is operated by the association Società Amis Muglin Mall, which also sells flour and barley from its own production.
