About the museum
The collection was begun around 1956 by the couple Marc and Alice Chappuis-Fähndrich. Marc Chappuis, originally a locomotive driver with the SBB, rescued objects of former everyday life from the Jura and the Bernese Jura before they were lost. Over three generations the collection was continued and expanded by the family.
It is housed in a barn in Develier. There the objects can be seen in reconstructed rooms and workshops, such as a village forge, a bistro, a grocery shop, a classroom, a pottery and bedrooms. The museum wants to show that farmers and craftsmen worked for centuries with very similar tools and forms.
In 2013 Marc and Alice Chappuis-Fähndrich founded a private non-profit foundation based in Develier, which preserves the collection and makes it accessible to the public. It is now supported by the "Compagnons du musée". The museum has since renamed itself Musée de la vie jurassienne.
