About the museum
The Ortsmuseum Liesberg (local museum) opened in 1997 and is housed in the former parsonage of the village in the Laufental (Laufen Valley). It tells the culture and history of Liesberg and its surroundings, and combines church and folk art history with natural history and crafts history.
One focus lies on religious folk art: nativity scenes, Baroque wooden statues, candlesticks, chalices of gold and silver, and paintings of Saints Fridolin and Simon Stock belong to the collection. In addition there are wooden and stone coats of arms of prince-bishops of the Diocese of Basel, baptismal fonts, church windows, uniforms of the Swiss Guard, and items from the time of the French Revolution.
Further rooms are devoted to the Stone Age and the geology of the Laufental, with the large fossil collection of Peter Borer, Roman archaeology, as well as imperial coins, glass and tableware. In the annex there are a shoemaker's workshop, roof tiles from the 17th and 18th centuries, ceramics, carpentry tools from various eras, musical instruments, flags, photos, club documents, uniforms and old weapons.
